The Story
This poster was produced in 1972, in conjunction with Documenta 5 in Kassel, Germany, curated by Harald Szeemann. It features a playful image by participating artist Ed Ruscha showing ants forming the exhibition title on a brilliant orange ground. (At the time he produced this image, Ruscha was also working on the Insects portfolio of silkscreen prints, which depict a variety of bugs in different configurations.) The numerical portion of this design was also used on the cover of the binder-format catalogue for international presentation, titled Befragung der Realität – Bildwelten heute (Questioning Reality—Pictorial Worlds Today).
