Printed in Venice, California, by Hamilton Press on Rives BFK paper, Ed Ruscha’s lithograph Angel is one of a small number of color trial proofs for the edition. The word is arrayed on the diagonal that the artist frequently uses to, in his words, “put speed into a flat, static picture,” and the brilliant red hue lends its fanciful Gothic serifs a further charge. While the lithograph was produced to benefit Project Angel Food, a nonprofit organization that provides meals to Los Angeles County residents affected by illness, the word “angel” recurs regularly in Ruscha’s oeuvre, alluding both to his Catholic upbringing and his long association with the so-called city of angels.
