The Story

Fixing My Face (2025) is a limited-edition print by Derrick Adams, based on his 2021 painting of the same title. Produced by Artspace in conjunction with the publication of Adams’s first monograph, published by Monacelli, this twenty-one-color screen print with aluminum leaf and metallic ink reimagines the painting, which is in the artist’s personal collection. Composed with interlocking geometric Cubist-inspired planes and organic curves in a distinctive palette, Fixing My Face melds frontal and profile views of a Black woman’s face as she looks into a mirror. “The figure and the environment in this piece are one and the same,” observes Adams. “She takes up the entirety of the picture plane, creating a composition that is both a portrait and a landscape.”
