This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Albert Oehlen at the Serpentine Galleries, London, which brought together a group of Oehlenâs paintings and drawings, dating from the 1980s through 2019, that interpret, appropriate, and remix visual elements from John Grahamâs painting Tramonto Spaventoso (Terrifying Sunset, 1940â49). As the focal point of the exhibition, Oehlen created an installation of monumental diptychs and triptychs within the Serpentine Galleriesâ domed central space that form part of his interpretation of the Rothko Chapel in Houston.
The unbound large-format book includes full-bleed artwork reproductions, a foldout poster, and a clear acetate cover featuring a silkscreened drawing by Oehlen. It includes an essay by art historian and curator Dawn AdeÌs, a text by artist AndreÌ Butzer, and a new conversation between Oehlen and Hans Ulrich Obrist, artistic director of the Serpentine Galleries.
